It has been my goal to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe ever since I came to the UK for the first time - and for good reasons. It’s not only the biggest theatre festival in the world offering amazing opportunities, but also an incredible adventure in a city that for a month becomes this glorious, colourful, energetic space full of people living their dream. Sounds great! Is it easy? No, it definitely isn’t! Do you need to be ready for things not going your way? Absolutely! Are people charging for accommodation taking the piss? Big time. Let’s get started then, shall we?
Jednym z moich marzeń było zagranie spektaklu na Festiwalu w Edynburgu - z wielu powodów. Nie tylko jest to największy festiwal teatralny na świecie otwierający nas na nowe możliwości, ale też niesamowita przygoda w mieście, które przez cały miesiąc tętni kolorem i energią ludzi powiązanych pasją do sceny. Brzmi super! Czy jest to łatwe? Zdecydowanie nie! Czy musimy przygotować się na to, że nie wszystko będzie szło po naszej myśli? Jak najbardziej! Czy ludzie wynajmujący lokum przyjezdnym kpią sobie z artystów wygórowanymi cenami? Koszmarnie! To co, zaczynamy?

Let me start with this: not everyone produces a show by themselves like I did. Obviously! But it’s the example I want to give you also to show it is doable! I have written my show, Daddy Issues, and performed it in London and on two UK tours to get reviews. It really helps to do your marketing ground work. I took care ot the festival admin mysef too - which is a big part of the EdFringe prep. The production side of things is a lot of paperwork (emailwork and filling-a-form work if you like). If you wanna do it solo, you can - but be ready to spend quite a bit of your time doing so: there will be a lot of emails coming through each week asking you to fulfil many different tasks on a deadline.
Zacznijmy od tego: nie każdy podchodzi do produkcji festiwalowego spektaklu na własną rekę, jak zrobiłam to ja. Ale chcę o tym opowiedzieć, żeby Wam pokazać, że można i się da! Sama napisałam swój monodram, który miał premierę na festiwalu w Londynie, po czym zabrałam go na dwa tournee po Wielkiej Brytanii, żeby zgarnąć recenzje i móc je wykorzystać do marketingu. Naprawdę polecam nagromadzić trochę materiałów promocyjnych, bo to pomaga potem w sprzedaży spektaklu teatrom oraz biletów widzom. Sama też zajęłam się produkcją i stroną administracyjna przed EdFringe. Papierkowa robota zajmuje sporo czasu, ale można to zrobić solo, o ile jest się przygotowanym na wiele maili, deadlinów i zaproszeń do wysłania dziennie.

Getting there
Based on my London start as an example, you can fly, you can train, you can coach. You can mix and match. I came from London on a National Express coach because it is much cheaper, but mainly because I had all my set with me. Be aware that coaches have luggage limits as well! So read up about it before you bring both a suitcase and your set to the coach station to avoid stress as you may need to book your theatre bits as extra.
Jak dotrzeć do Edynburga? To zależy skąd, oczywiście, ale podam swój londyński przykład. Można samolotem, można pociągiem (co w Wielkiej Brytanii często jest najdroższą opcją), można autokarem. Ja wybrałam się autokarem, bo jest o wiele tańszy, ale głównie ze względu na transport sporej ilości elementów scenografii do spektaklu. Pamiętajcie, że autokary też mają limit bagażu! Także warto się nimi zapoznać zanim dotrzemy na stację, żeby uniknąć stresów i niedomówień.

Your theatre venue
This is down to individual preference of where you apply and then the artistic directors choices of whether they would offer you a slot. I was invited by the Pleasance to perform at the Courtyard, which was a dream come true for me. For anyone considering Pleasance: they are worth it. You feel incredibly looked after by Nic and the team. Very much recommend applying. In general, I think the marketing you got from all the shows you do before applying for the Fringe venues helps with getting the space that is your first choice.
Wybór teatru na Festiwal w Edynburgu. Jest to kwestia mocno indywidualna, możemy wysłać zgłoszenie do wielu i sprawdzić, który teatr zaoferuje nam miejsce. Ja dostałam zaproszenie do Pleasance Courtyard, który zawsze był moim numerem jeden. Jeśli rozważacie Pleasance powiem od razu: warto! Przez cały miesiąc naprawdę można czuć się zaopiekowanym przez Nica i ekipę, pomoc w różnych sytuacjach, a także ze strony technicznej. Wracając do składania aplikacji do teatrów, jak wspomniałam wcześniej, marketing/recenzje pomagają w dostaniu się do naszego wybranego teatru.

Performing
It can be tough, team. Especially if you are taking a solo show there and your directors/producers/writers/techies/friends/whoever you would bring with you are not there all the time or at all. There were many actors who had a full month of performances scheduled and they went home half way through (I would say, if this is something you decide to do, nothing wrong with that. Look after yourselves and your mental health). Tickets can be hard to sell, so you need to remember that flyering will take a big part of your time as well. Again, I think the more marketing prep you do before hand, the more you can include in your materials, leaflets, posters to help you sell your show. Also, apply for various competitions throughout the Fringe (and before) if you can - my play got longlisted for the Popcorn Writing Award by the Popcorn Group and BBC Writersroom, which was announced on the first week of the Fringe and helped with selling my tickets enormously! So apply, cannot recommend and stress this enough. It’s worth it.
Regarding performing specifically a solo show, keep in mind you have no other actors to rely on, so look after yourself! Pleasance allows you to book up to three days off throughout the month, so give yourself a day off as well.
Występy. Nie ukrywam, że czasami może być ciężko! Zwłaszcza, jeśli bierzecie na festiwal monodram, a wasz reżyser/producent/pisarz/techniczny/ktokolwiek inny do wsparcia nie jest z wami przez cały miesiąc. Wielu aktorów, których spektakle chciałam zobaczyć, wróciło do domu w połowie miesiąca (powiem tak, jeśli zdecydujecie się wrócić wcześniej, nie ma w tym nic złego - dbanie o zdrowie psychiczne jest ważne). Sprzedaż biletów bywa trudna, kiedy na festiwalu jest 6 tysięcy innych spektakli, także trzeba pamiętać, że rozdawanie ulotek będzie sporą częścią naszego dnia! Znów, im więcej materiałów marketingowych nagromadzimy przed festiwalem, tym więcej możemy dodać do plakatów/ulotek. Polecam także zrobić research konkursów odbywających się w ramach festiwalu. Moja szuka została nominowana do Popcorn Writing award przez Popcorn Group i BBC Writersroom, co zostało ogłoszone na samym początku festiwalu i bardzo pomogło w sprzedaży biletów. Także wysyłajcie zgłoszenia na konkursy!
Nawiązując jeszcze do brania monodramu na festiwal, warto pamiętać, że nie ma z nami innych aktorów na scenie, więc dbajcie o siebie! Pleasance pozwala zabukować do trzech dni wolnych w czasie festiwalu i naprawdę warto dać sobie przerwę.

Walk a lot! Edinburgh is an absolutely magical and stunning place to get lost in a little. There are so many hidden gems and beautiful spots that can be easy to miss, so go and explore! Additional bonus of performing at the Fringe: you get to know this city very well as you get to live there for a month! Here are some of the spots I recommend:
MOTHER INDIA CAFE - incredible Indian food.
HIMALAYA CENTRE, TIBETAN CAFE - incredible momos (Nepalese dumplings).
THE RAEBURN - a great pub in Stockbridge with an outside garden full of lanterns.
DEAN VILLAGE - a hidden small village with a 19th century buildings over a stream.
CALTON HILL - the most iconic, postcard view of Edinburgh.
ARTHUR’S SEAT - a great hike for your day off offering 360 degree views of the city.
STOCKBRIDGE - a beautiful neighbourhood for a walk away from touristy places. Gorgeous houses!
THE VINCENT PUB - stunning little pub we visited many times, it’s in Stockbridge so more of a local spot than a touristy one, nice for a breather away from the hustle!
EDINBURGH COPY SHOP - this one is for my fellow artists, if you get reviews you wanna print the snippets of to add to posters, head there. You can order via email and pick up next day (in most cases, there may be a slight delay as the Fringe goes on and everyone prints everything, but it’s still very quick and for a decent price).
Miasto! Spacerujecie jak najwięcej! Edynburg jest przepięknym i magicznym miejscem na to, żeby zgubić się nieco w jego ulicach i zakamarkach. Jest w nim wiele ukrytych lokacji, które można łatwo przegapić, także spacerujcie i odkrywajcie! Jednym z bonusów bycia na festiwalu Fringe jest to, że mieszkacie w Edynburgu przez calutki miesiąc i naprawdę możecie poznać to miasto od lokalnej strony. Kilka rzeczy, które odkryłam tym razem:

EDINBURGH COPY SHOP - okej, to dla moich artystów. Jak dostaniecie recenzje, będziecie chcieli je dodrukować do ulotek lub wydrukować jako naklejki na już rozwieszone plakaty. Można zamawiać mailem i zazwyczaj wszystko jest gotowe do odebrania następnego dnia (czasem dłużej, zwłaszcza w samym środku festiwalu, ale nadal wszystko jest donodebrania dość szybko). Przystępne ceny!

Most importantly? Have fun, immerse yourself in the festival and the city and enjoy performing at the biggest theatre festival in the world!
Najważniejsze? Dobrze się bawcie, zagłębcie się w festiwalu i cieszcie się z występowania na tym największym na świecie teatru!
