Manhattan, Brooklyn & Long Island
It’s been a while since I first came to the Big Apple and I’ve fallen in love with its never-ending stream of yellow taxis, busy skyline of enormous buildings and people doing their best to “make it there”. There’s certain magnetism that New York City possesses, the magnetism that draws me towards it and makes me miss being there as soon as the sight of Manhattan Island is lost between the clouds visible through a window on my flight home.
Minęło sporo czasu, od kiedy jako nastolatka po raz pierwszy znalazłam się w Wielkim Jabłku, który z miejsca skradł moje serce nieustannym ciągiem złotych taksówek, gęstym horyzontem wciąż rozmnażających się wieżowców, a także mieszkańcami, starającymi się spełnić swoje marzenia o sukcesie. Nowy Jork posiada swoisty magnetyzm, który nakłania mnie do powrotów i sprawia, że tęsknię za nim już w chwili, kiedy Manhattan znika za chmurami widzianymi z okna powrotnego samolotu.
I keep coming back. Maybe it’s because acting, my chosen path, in many ways has “New York” written all over it: Broadway plays and musicals, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, to name a few. Maybe it’s because Sinatra sang about it so beautifully and I believed him (maybe I still do?). Or perhaps, it’s because when I’ve worked hard while living in the States, Manhattan felt like a different world. A world which makes all the hard work somehow make sense, because you can spend a few dollars you’ve earned on that ticket to the beating heart of the island and feel like you’re capable of anything.

Może to przez moją obraną scieżkę kariery aktorskiej, w końcu Nowy Jork ma teatr i film ściśle wpisany w swój życiorys: musicale i spektakle na Brodwayu, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, można by wymieniać całe dnie. A może wracam, bo Sinatra mnie przekonał, że każdy może tam wszystko osiagnął i mu uwierzyłam? Albo dlatego, że kiedy mieszkałam w Stanach, Manhattan wydawał się częścią świata, w którym ciężka praca ma sens - wszak możesz pozwolić sobie na kupno z uzbieranych dolarów biletu na pociąg do tętniącego serca wyspy i poczuć, że możesz być kim tylko zechcesz.

New York City isn’t your usual “nice” type, like many Instagram Stories might want you to believe mostly showing village neighbourhood vibes and bottomless brunches. It’s a concrete jungle ready to make you or break you. It’s a place where dreams come true, but also a place where those whose fortune has turned sleep rough. It’s a machine run by the poor for the benefit of the rich, with faulty transportation system and overwhelming homelessness - things that haven’t changed for years now, but need to be addressed (which isn’t an issue just in the States, of course - but for this post, focus on comparison of my recent travels to New York, DC, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California states, where the scale of the problem hasn’t changed throughout a ten year period of my visits).
And yet, there’s a whole bunch of reasons to love The City That Never Sleeps. The artists of many fields, actors, fashionistas, designers, painters, chefs… Any profession can find true pearls in New York City and these bold creators aren’t afraid to tell you what exactly makes them stand out. The food scene is booming, with some of the best new restaurants in the world, from cheap eats to fine dining. The views of the city are breathtaking, both from above, like the classic Top of the Rock, and across the river, with up and coming rooftop bars and hotel views of Brooklyn, Williamsburg or Long Island City. And sure, maybe I look at New York now through less of a rose-tinted glasses perspective and more “relationship status: it’s complicated”, less “Friends” and more “Taxi Driver”, but it still has my heart and know I will be back soon.
Nowy Jork nie jest grzecznym typem, pomimo tak wielu Instagram Stories wspominających głównie przyjazne sąsiedztwa i kolorowe brunche. NYC to betonowa dżungla, która może ci pomóc, ale i stać się największym wrogiem. To miejsce, gdzie spełniają się marzenia, ale też gdzie ci, do których fortuna przestała się uśmiechać, walczą o przetrwanie; miasto, które budują ubodzy na pożytek bogatych, z wadliwym systemem transportowym i wysokim poziomem bezdomności - czegoś, co nie zmienia się od lat (zdaję sobie sprawę, oczywiście, że nie jest to wyłącznie problem w Stanach, na potrzeba tego posta skupiam się jednak na porównaniu moich pobytów w stanach Nowego Jorku, DC, New Jersey, Pennsylwanii oraz Kalifornii, gdzie skala problemu nie zmieniła się znacząco na przestrzeni ostatnich dziesięciu lat).
Pomimo to, jest cała masa powodów, dla których warto odwiedzić Miasto, Które Nigdy Nie Śpi. Artyści różnorakich dziedzin, aktorzy, fashionisci, projektanci, malarze, szefowie kuchni… Każda profesja znajdzie w Nowym Jorku prawdziwe perły, a pewni siebie twórcy nie boją sie głośno mówić o tym, czym się wyróżniają. Kulinarna strona miasta jest niezwykle bogata, pełno jest świetnych restauracji zarówno tańszych, jak i tych z gwiazdką Michelin. Widoki zapierają dech w piersiach, czy to z góry, jak słynny Top of the Rock, czy tych zza rzeki, z tarasow nowoczesnych barów i hoteli Brooklynu, Williamsburga i Long Island City. A ja? Moze to prawda, ze patrzę na Nowy Jork trochę mniej przez różowe okulary, a bardziej “status zwiazku: to skomplikowane”, mniej jak na sceny z “Przyjaciół”, bardziej z “Taxi Drivera”, to nadal go uwielbiam i jestem pewna, ze już niedługo znów tam wrócę.
